Biking the Black Hills (original Airdate: Feb. 17, 1997, PBS.)

Traveling cross-country will never be the same when GOING PLACES gives the audience a behind-the-handlebars view of bikers as they ride to the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. This episode shows what it's like to follow two groups of bikers along a scenic route of back roads from Seattle, Washington, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The final destination is the 1996 Sturgis Rally and Races.

On the Seattle route, GOING PLACES travels past Mt. Rainier, Washington, to Virginia City, Montana, to visit "The Bale of Hay Saloon," the historic bar which can be seen in such movies as "Little Big Man" and "Lonesome Dove." From Minneapolis, Minnesota, GOING PLACES passes through the beautiful Minnesota River Valley and the prairies of Badlands, South Dakota. In addition, this episode brings the audience up close to two of the most famous American monuments -- Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument.

GOING PLACES finally rolls into Sturgis, South Dakota, for the world's largest biker gathering, an annual event since 1938. This program lets viewers get a down-and-dirty glimpse of a brew of races, partying, and exhibitionism under the Great Plains sun. GOING PLACES takes an intriguing look at women bikers with a visit with singer-songwriter Gevin Fax. On the whole, the episode introduces viewers to some of the most engaging road warriors they're ever likely to encounter.
